Licensure Exam for Mental Health Counselors

Preparing for the licensure exam for mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists and social workers can be an overwhelming and terrifying experience…especially if you aren’t connected with valuable resources to support you. Does your heart beat a little faster when you think of taking your counseling licensure exam? How about those palms…do they get sweaty? What if I get there and totally freeze and forget everything? What if I don’t pass? I don’t know about you, but these were some of my body sensations and thoughts running through my mind several years ago as I was anticipating my licensure exam. I want you to know that these thoughts are normal AND there are resources that simulate the test experience that can help empower and prepare you. In my experience, several different types of preparation are necessary for successful completion of the exam.  Of course there’s familiarizing yourself with the test process, structure and what to expect, then there’s being comfortable with the material on the test, but at the foundation there is your mindset and emotional state in which you engage in the experience from. Are you willing to offer yourself a cushion of compassion to rest on? Sure we want to pass the first time around. Sure we want to check the exam off our “to-do” list so we’re one step closer to licensure. Sure we want to feel competent as therapists especially since our culture has said that these tests prove some level of competence. But at the end of the day, YOU have to be the one to know in your heart how you hold space...
